1978 Macho Trans Am #181
This is a start to documenting the purchase and rebuild of my 1978 Macho T/A. It is #181 of 202 made. This is a solid top car with a 400 CID engine and Borg Warner T-10 4 speed manual transmission with a Hurst shifter.
I bought this car back in 1996 from a Thrifty Nickel ad. Car was being driven by an 18 year old in Denver City, Texas. They were asking a decent price at the time for an old Trans Am that needed some work. They had previously had the seat covers redone, changed the stereo and speakers, added aftermarket wheels, and had the hood repainted. They didn't know who or why someone would put "Macho T/A" on the rear spoiler - I certainly didn't tell them either, lol.
A friend of mine, Mark, who was also into 2nd gen cars came along with me - we piddled around under the hood long enough to see that the number on the block matched the VIN. We haggled a bit, but finally paid their asking price perhaps out of sympathy, but more likely out of fear of losing the deal - ended up driving the car home.
The 1996 photos were taken shortly thereafter.
I drove the car a while, then decided to restore it to it's former glory. The 2000 photos were taken during that process. Due to a momentary lapse of money that lasted 7 years, the restore was halted. The car has been stored inside since then. 2007 is the year to finish the project, so more photos are coming soon.
Actually, I am working on a 1978 Y82 Black & Gold Special Edition first - then once it is finished and sold, I will work on the Macho.
