I am a noob to Linux, but am working on building a Linux box to function as a LAMP server for program development. Back in the early 80s - I wrote a program that worked great in DOS - when Windoze 3.1 came along, I had to make mods to support that - same for Win98 & WinXP.
Basically, I'm tired of having to change my programs every time M$ comes out with a new version of the same ole OS. I figure web-based apps are the future and development of applications on a LAMP platform inherently separates logic from presentation - leaving the latter to whatever version of browser software M$ and the rest of the world decide to write.
Using standards compliant XML & CSS, I have some control over the presentation and with mySQL and PHP, I have complete control over the logic.
Anyway - my first taste of Linux was a "free" copy of TurboLinux that came with my purchase of Delphi 4 (years ago). TurboLinux seems to be very popular in the Far East, but finding help resources written in English was a chore. My next (and current) round of Linux is with Debian - started with Woody, now have Sarge - and am working on building a stable, secure server.
The reason I like Debian is summed up in a quote from a message board I read recently where the writer said
"What makes Debian such a great release as a server, IMO, is that Debian has a very long life span. They do make regular security updates, but they haven't officially released a new Debian version in a LONG time, nor are they requiring older Debian versions to upgrade or be SOL."
